TEACHING STAFF

St Philip’s has a well-qualified and dedicated teaching staff. There has been a remarkable continuity and loyalty of teaching staff over the years, which has been of huge benefit to the pupils. Apart from the team of full time class and subject teachers, St Philip’s has the benefit of a Roman Catholic chaplain, a highly professional in-house learning support unit, a director of music who oversees several instrumental teachers and sport and swimming coaches.

St Philip’s also boasts a full time housekeeper, Mrs Sue Arnold, an ex-parent of the school, who looks after the domestic arrangements of the school, ranging from supplying second hand uniform, to providing medication for boys who are not feeling well and liaising with their parents, to cutting up birthday cakes!

A vital and traditional post at St Philip's is that of Junior Master. It is a short-term appointment intended for gap-year students and young people looking for life experience or work experience in the teaching profession. We are always on the look out for suitable candidates, who ideally are connected with the school in some way and are thinking of becomming a teacher or have a special skill such as drama, singing or sports coaching. Former Junior Masters at St Philip's have organised trips abroad, plays and sports activites and each has left their own unique legacy to the life of St Philip's.

Formal parent/teacher meetings are arranged routinely each term, but parents are always encouraged to meet teachers individually should there be anything they wish to discuss. The Headmaster is generally available for a quick chat at the beginning and end of each school day without appointment, and the other staff are equally accessible. In this way we hope that minor worries can be addressed before they become real issues!
